An Inclusive Counseling Approach for Clients with Chronic Health Issues presented by Peter Addy, PhD, LPC, LMHC
This presentation explores inclusive counseling practices through a Marxist lens, focusing on working with clients who have chronic health issues. Attendees will examine how neoliberal ideologies impact current counseling practices and learn practical techniques for reframing therapeutic goals beyond productivity-centered metrics. The session addresses how socioeconomic factors influence chronic health conditions and offers strategies for challenging internalized ableism while promoting community-based approaches to care. Participants will evaluate their current practices through the APA Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct, considering how systemic change relates to beneficence and justice. Psychologists will gain tools to provide more inclusive and empowering care for clients with chronic health conditions, moving beyond individualized interventions toward addressing broader social determinants of health.
Peter H. Addy, PhD, is a licensed professional counselor, supervisor, and educator specializing in adults with chronic pain and related chronic health conditions. He currently serves as Education Director at Psychedelic Affirming Education in Portland, OR. Drawing on both professional expertise and lived experience with fibromyalgia syndrome, Dr. Addy brings a unique perspective to counseling clients with chronic health issues. His background includes extensive work in substance abuse research, hospital settings with adults experiencing severe mental illness, and crisis intervention. Dr. Addy takes a critical approach to examining how socioeconomic factors and neoliberal ideologies impact counseling practices and client well-being. He advocates for inclusive therapeutic approaches that challenge productivity-centered models of health and promote community-based care.
